Perhaps the easiest step in establishing a presence on the web is to register your domain name (something like "kmdesign.net"). For less than $10 per year (for most common domain name types - including the ".com" suffix) you can register your own name - in just a few minutes - at AlphaWebmasters.

There's no reason why you shouldn't handle the domain registration yourself. Don't let a web designer try to tell you that they should register it for you. If you ever have to make changes to your site hosting or maintenance arrangements, it'll be much easier if you have control of the domain name.
